Hospital – Community Collaborations to Promote Healthy Food Access

Healthy food is a key component of a healthy life and can be an important economic driver to support a thriving community. Many community benefit programs are working with partners to make fresh, healthy food affordable and accessible in their communities. In this webinar, Health Care Without Harm presents its Delivering community benefit: Healthy food playbook, a suite of resources to support hospital-community collaborations to promote healthy food access and healthier food environments. Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, one of the case studies featured in the Playbook, shares success stories and lessons learned from several impactful initiatives to increase healthy food access and healthy eating. In addition, Big River Economic and Agricultural Development Alliance discusses its collaboration with Our Lady of the Lake and other partners in the Red Stick Farmers Market, which operates several market locations in the city, providing healthy food access to the community and vital economic opportunities for local farmers. Topics addressed throughout the presentations include gaining buy-in from hospital leadership, sustainable financing of programs, building effective community partnerships, and program evaluation. Ample time will be provided for discussion of best practices and lessons learned.
Speakers
Susan Bridle-Fitzpatrick, PhD, is the Senior Researcher for the national Healthy Food in Health Care program at the global non-profit organization Health Care Without Harm. This program partners with Health Care Without Harm’s membership-based Practice Greenhealth to support a network of over 30% of US hospitals to implement food procurement and programmatic strategies as a core form of preventive medicine by supporting the development of healthy, resilient food systems as a pathway to community health.
Susan is currently leading a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded national research project examining hospital community benefit programming to improve healthy food access, reduce the risk of obesity and diet-related disease, and promote healthier food systems. She is also adjunct faculty at the University of Denver’s Korbel School of International Studies, where she teaches courses on global food and nutrition security and the social determinants of health. Susan’s previous research has examined economic, social, and environmental factors contributing to the obesity epidemic in Mexico.
She has published award-winning research on the subjects of nutrition transitions, obesity, food consumption and poverty, food access and exposure, food acquisition practices, health inequities, and regulation of unhealthy food and beverage industries.
Coletta C. Barrett, RN, MHA, FAHA, FACHE
Possessing more than 40 years of hospital clinical, health plan medical management and executive leadership, Coletta Barrett serves as Vice President of Mission for Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center – a tertiary, Catholic Academic Medical Center with 824 licensed beds in Baton Rouge, LA. Coletta is responsible for Community Advocacy, Pastoral Care, Parish Nursing, Mission Services, Community Benefit, Government Relations, Mental and Behavioral Health, Health Centers in Schools and the Palliative Medicine Program. Prior to her position at Our Lady of the Lake, she was Vice President of Research and Policy at the Louisiana Hospital Association (LHA).
Coletta Barrett is a diploma graduate from the Charity Hospital School of Nursing, possesses a bachelor of science in Nursing from Southeastern Louisiana University and earned a Master of Health Administration from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in 1994.
Coletta has an appointment from the Louisiana Legislature to serve as a member of the Louisiana Health Care Commission and currently serves on the Executive Committee. She also serves as the Chairman of the Board for the Mayor’s Healthy City Initiative in Baton Rouge. Charged with improving the city’s outcome measures for health, in 2015 The Mayor’s Healthy City Initiative was awarded the 2015 NOVA Award from the American Hospital Association for being the only community in the United States to achieve a Joint Community Health Needs Assessment and a Joint Implementation Plan.
Copper Alvarez
Since 2002 Ms. Alvarez has served as the Executive Director of Big River Economic & Agricultural Development Alliance (BREADA), the non-profit organization that operates Red Stick Farmers Market & Main Street Market. Ms. Alvarez recently served as president on the Board of Directors for Farmers Market Coalition, a national organization providing resources and networking for farmers markets across the country. She served FMC for 10 years, ending her term in 2018.
During Ms. Alvarez’s tenure with BREADA and Red Stick Farmers Market, food access issues and new farm recruitment have been priorities. With grants from USDA, the Markets began accepting SNAP benefits & expanded opportunities for low-income families to shop at farmers markets. In 2012 BREADA was a collaborative partner with the Mayor’s Healthy City Initiative in a Blue Cross Blue Shield challenge grant to begin a mobile farmers market in North Baton Rouge and other food deserts, providing access to locally grown and seasonal produce. With support from Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center outreach to families has served the Baton Rouge community in targeted programs to increase the health and wellness of underserved families. BREADA programs at LSU Health Clinics in Baton Rouge included vouchers to expand the buying power of patients for their fruits and vegetables. Additionally, OLOL’s sponsorship increased nutrition education for the Market’s children’s program, Red Stick Sprouts. Over 3100 kids involved have met farmers and learned the value of eating fruits and vegetables.
Ms. Alvarez served as the state farmers market representative on the Louisiana legislative study group for the Food Safety Modernization Act. She is a member of the Louisiana Sustainable Local Food Policy Council and served on the Louisiana Food Access Summit inaugural committee in 2012. She has represented BREADA on the legislative ‘Healthy Retail Study Group’ that proposed legislation to encourage increased access to fresh produce in underserved rural and urban communities. She also served as an advisory board member for Buy Fresh Buy Local, a national initiative of the Kellogg Foundation.
Ms. Alvarez is a past recipient of the John W. Barton Excellence in Nonprofit Management award. She is a Past President and sustaining member of the Junior League of Baton Rouge and has served on the advisory counsel for the League’s research on childhood obesity.
